Steel Challenge Prep: Fast, Clean, Repeat

BY: Vincent Vasquez, C2 Tactical of Tempe, AZ

Steel Challenge is simple on paper and spicy on the clock: engage a small array of steel plates as quickly and cleanly as you can, finishing on the stop plate. Most stages are shot in multiple strings; your times add up, and misses cost penalties. That means two things decide your day: fast first shots and efficient transitions. The good news? You can build both with focused practice at C2 Tactical before match day.

Gear that works (without going race-gun)

Pick the division that matches how you train. A rimfire pistol or rifle is a great entry point since you start from low ready rather than a holster draw. For a centerfire handgun, bring a safe, range-approved holster mounted on a sturdy belt. Pack at least five magazines and 200–300 rounds; Steel Challenge goes quickly, and having pre-staged mags keeps your head in the game. Eye/ear protection, a brimmed cap, and a small range bag round out the essentials. Unsure about ammo or magazine count? Ask the counter at C2 or book a quick Private Firearm Consultation to sanity-check your setup.

The two drills that move the needle

1) Draw (or low-ready) to the first shot:
Set a single target at a modest distance. From a beep, build a clean presentation and break one well-called shot. Record ten reps and average your time. Your goal is consistency—smooth mount, predictable sight picture, and a pressed-not-slapped trigger. Centerfire shooters can work draw mechanics in a Private Lesson before moving to live draws in approved classes.

2) Transitions with purpose:
Hang three targets in a shallow arc. From the beep, shoot 1–1–1, focusing on driving your eyes first, then the gun. Keep splits honest rather than spraying. Add a par time and chip away a few hundredths each session. If you want cognitive pressure, have a partner call target order mid-string or replicate this in the simulator for rapid target ID and throttle control.

Build a repeatable routine.

Before each string, take a brief “baseline” scan—confirm mags, footing, and stage plan. After each string, finger high on the frame, muzzle downrange, and run a purposeful left-center-right visual check of targets and gear. Top off mags, note anything that felt sticky, and reset deliberately. Those tiny habits add up to fewer fumbles and cleaner times.

Common first-match questions

  • Holster or low ready? Rimfire divisions start low and ready. Centerfire divisions typically require an approved holster and prior safety sign-off. If you haven’t drawn from a holster under supervision, schedule a Private Shooting Lesson first.
  • Sights vs. red dot? Both win. Choose the sighting system you practice with most, then memorize where it prints at common match distances.
  • How many rounds? Plan for 200+ plus a margin. Bring more than you think—you’ll want extra reps.

Put it on the calendar.

Check C2 Tactical’s calendar for classes, simulator blocks, and weekly match opportunities. Want to sharpen up as a group? Book a Private Group Class and run a mock match with coaching on pace, footwork, and stage planning. If you’re building a regular practice cadence from Gilbert, a membership makes lane reservations and frequent tune-ups easier.

Show up prepared, keep your plan simple, and chase clean runs first—speed will follow. Ready to get started? Reserve a lane at C2 Tactical of Tempe, line up a simulator session, or book a lesson and walk into your Steel Challenge match with confidence.
