Repair is the word that stops people. Someone said the word tear, and now repair sounds like an operating room. At Modern Medicine of Surprise, AZ, we use repair differently. The repair you actually want is a shoulder that reaches the high cabinet, lifts at work, and lets you sleep on your side again. More than one path can get you there. If you have been working and sleeping around that shoulder for months because surgery seemed like the only fix, there is a better first step.
What a Tear on a Scan Actually Tells You
A tear is a finding, not a verdict. A scan cannot show what your shoulder can still do, and that question decides far more of your care. Many shoulders with a torn rotator cuff regain useful motion and strength through a rehab plan built in stages, with no operation involved. Your age, health, and goals matter, and so do the size and location of the tear. A retired golfer and a warehouse worker can bring in the same scan report and leave with two different plans.
What the Shoulder Evaluation Measures
We start by listening to your story. You tell us when the pain began, what sets it off, and what helps at the end of a long day. Then we measure what the scan leaves out. We check how far your arm moves in every direction, compare strength side to side, and find the exact positions that bring on your pain. We also watch how the whole shoulder moves, because the painful arm usually moves differently well before it reaches the sore spot. Every test is paced to what your shoulder tolerates. When the exam leaves a question about the tendon itself, we use on-site ultrasound to look at it during your evaluation.
When a Non-Surgical Plan Deserves the First Chance
If your pain built gradually and the arm still works, a non-surgical plan usually deserves the first chance. Resting until the pain disappears feels sensible, but the shoulder rebuilds through the right amount of work, added at the right pace. We set a starting level your shoulder handles, adjust the daily habits that keep the tendon irritated, and add strength step by step, starting the same week as your evaluation. We pick the reach or lift you most want back, retest it on a schedule, and show you the change in real numbers instead of asking you to guess. If a step up stirs night pain, we adjust the pace and keep going.
When a Surgical Opinion Belongs in Your Plan
Some findings change the plan on the first visit. A fall or heavy lift followed by sudden weakness deserves a prompt look. So does marked weakness on testing, a larger tear, or a finished rehab plan that has stalled short of useful function. We are a non-surgical clinic, so when one of those findings shows up, we tell you before you have to ask and coordinate the surgical referral ourselves. Rehab stays part of the recovery on either path, including a staged plan after a surgical repair.
