Greenville, SC – Getting to Play a Part in Military History with a Sign

BY: Thomas Edwards, Liberty Signs

Liberty Signs was offered an excellent opportunity a while back.  A group of dedicated volunteers is establishing a Military History Museum on the South Ramp opposite the Runway Café in Greenville’s Downtown Airport.

Liberty Signs has manufactured the building sign, and we eagerly await its mounting on the building itself.  We have donated the material and time to make the sign; while one of our industry partners, GRIMCO (located in Greer) supplied the sign substrate.  Our thanks to GRIMCO for their support.  We, at Liberty Signs, are proud and pleased to be able to participate in helping to establish what we are certain will be a great addition to the Upstate.

The building itself is an old style that is termed a “Butler building”.  It is not quite a Quonset hut, but it is a metal building.  Of course, once completed, it will have air conditioning and other amenities for an enjoyable tour through history.   (If you are a military brat or served long enough to have been in, around, or had to live in a Quonset hut, you  will never forget them!)

The building has been gutted and a great deal of basic work has been completed.  Now they are entering phase two.  Phase two is creating interactive displays that will immerse a visitor (school children included) into the history timeline.  The Military History Museum wishes to have a special place where a visitor can actually touch historical items and not just view them behind a glass case.  The goal is to get visitors to connect on some level with our military veterans who so gallantly and selflessly defended our country in order to preserve our special freedoms, freedoms unlike any others in this world.

Areas of particular emphasis in this museum are World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam.  No other museums in the area have much in the way of attractions or information on these conflicts.  If you have items like vehicles (they do not need to be operational), uniforms, armaments and other interesting items and are interested in participating through donations of these, please contact the MHCC.

The MHCC is the non-profit organization (a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt organization by the IRS) that is tackling this project.  Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, and the MHCC is a non-profit corporation in the state of SC.  (Donations can be mailed to MHCC, 100 Tower Drive, Unit 6, Greenville, SC 29607.  For more information contact Wayne Scholtes at wlscholtes@charter.net or 864-978-0780.)

MHCC is now seeking the funds and donated services necessary for phase two, which will include creating interactive displays that can immerse visitors and school children in history.
While the MHCC organization has a number of members with a wealth of experience in running museums and nonprofit organizations; they continually seek donations of not just money to further the museum but historical items as well.  They have military vehicles, armaments, historical period attire, communications equipment, books and everything else that is needed to fill a museum, but could always use more.  Most importantly MHCC needs your support to help renovate the building for the new use.
