I like 3D……well, not all 3D movies, but I do like 3D signs.  I like objects representing a business like a tire for a tire shop, a shoe for a shoe store or a giant tape measure for a hardware store (like the one on Main Street in Simpsonville), and I think they are clever and attractive signs. Even if one can’t quite go that route, one can still get a three dimensional effect by using 3D lettering as in Dimensional Letters.  As a former materials engineer, I do appreciate that one can get letters in just about any size finish and material.  Here is a sample of a basic offering: Aluminum (and other metals), thermoformed plastic, metal over acrylic, metal over foam-core, foam-core, acrylic – heck, the only ones not in this photo are those of solid wood – and these are just some of the types available. [gallery ids="1339,1344,1345"] The 3D effect that dimensional letters give a sign quite literally give that “pop” which helps make it stand out from the flat plane of many signs.  Letters can be painted, illuminated, curved, flat or given some other desired surface texture.  Letters can even be put on different planes or altered lines in order to activate the viewer’s curiosity and interest.  These signs can catch one’s attention as one views them from the side, and they can help keep a viewer interested as they come around to see the face of a sign.  It gives a business that little bit more exposure and time to mentally register the “brand”.  Space and time, indeed! One can light the letters externally or internally.  LEDs can be utilized to create a luminous shadow or halo around the letters to help them stand out, especially at night.
