In the spacious interior of the hotel, the beautifully designed colonial-era Art Deco style focuses heavily on black and white, and dark-shaded wood, evoking the highest standard of luxury. The Siam is spacious as it houses only 39 suites and villas, offering an overall intimate atmosphere; some guests describe the property as feeling more like a beautiful home than a hotel. Lush gardens extend down to the river, with small lotus ponds and arched climbing plant walkways. Inside, communal areas make extensive use of floor-to-ceiling black-wood panel windows offering plenty of natural light as well as air circulation, an important detail since only the hotel's bedrooms are air-conditioned. Antique ornaments and curiosities from the owners' personal collections— a family of Thai musical celebrities— are carefully placed at every turn; even the toilets have tasteful art objects, and a lobby shop sells items from the stock of the owners. Guests are usually couples looking for opulent seclusion, but families are also invited and often live here. The waterside location of the Siam is wedged between the leafy and ancient, European-influenced Dusit district of Bangkok at the fringes of the old town and the banks of the river Chao Phraya. The hotel offers a free, 25-minute longtail boat transfer between its private pier and Saphan Taksin, connecting to the elevated Skytrain, and guests can also be dropped at any of about 30 city piers. A few sights are within walking distance: The Vimanmek Teak Palace Museum and Dusit Zoo are both a five-minute drive away and the Grand Palace is a 15-minute drive or a fast boat transfer. However, the location of the Siam, out of reach from the non-riverside attractions of Bangkok, means tourists will have to negotiate the heavy traffic of the area to get to the city centre, which can take 20 or 30 minutes. That being said, the emphasis is certainly on remaining within the grounds, providing a break from chaotic Bangkok, rather than exploring further out. Depending on traffic, Bangkok's main airport is 30 to 50 minutes away; remember that if you arrive by taxi, the hotel may be tricky to find, although it is well signposted from the street. The hotel is composed of three-story main building suites and private villas scattered around the grounds. They are all spacious, with wide beds and freestanding slipper bathrooms in Art Deco style as the centerpieces of the bedrooms. Equally spacious are the bathrooms with separate sinks, walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads, beautiful white floor-to-ceiling tiles and luxury toiletries. Some guests claim disturbed sleep from loud air-conditioning in-room systems, and views vary from room to room— some overlook nearby parking lots, while other standard rooms lack entirely windows in bedrooms, with natural light coming from the bathrooms only. This could make one of the top-floor pricier River View Suites worth choosing, which also come with high ceilings. Keep in mind that the additional upriver luxury Peninsula and Mandarin Oriental hotels have river-view rooms for less than standard rooms at The Siam, although these larger-scale properties lack the Siam trademark charm. The villas come with private swimming pools, hot tubs and roof terraces.
