The Capella Ubud is a hybrid between an uber-luxe glamping resort and a tented African camp like East African ones. The resort prefers to call itself a tented luxury camp, but the similarity to a traditional glamping experience is unquestionable. The difference is perhaps accessibility; for those with limited mobility, Capella Ubud isn’t because most of the tents are situated down very steep volcanic stone tracks. With the persistent humidity that envelops the region they can be very slippery.
The Capella Ubud, opened in the summer of 2018, is one of Bali’s most beautiful and exclusive resorts. Conceived by the flamboyant hotel designer Bill Bensley, who succeeded in persuading the developer, businessman Suwito Gunawan, to forgo the concept of 100 + room resort for an intimate and high-end tented property that would retain the rainforest as it is, Capella Ubud is a place to admire.
Bensley has a vast portfolio of vibrant assets under his belt, ranging from The Siam in Bangkok to the Intercontinental Danang, the Four Seasons Tented Camp in the Golden Triangle or the Shinta Mani properties, especially Shinta Mani Wild in remote Cambodia and with a similar nature to Capella Ubud. He is renowned for challenging expectations and every time he comes up with something new, while he still maintains his exotic and luxurious luxury. Black and white meet vivid bold solid colors and patterns are the hallmarks of many of its products. You know this when you enter a property in Bill Bensley. Via his Shinta Mani property and through the hotels he designs, the designer is also a fervent environmental activist, trying to minimize damage during their construction. Nature is impeccable, the job of the designer is to retain as much of that as possible.
Not just his safari-inspired property is Capella Ubud. Like Rosewood Luang Prabang, Shinta Mani Wild has similar design concepts. Bensley took inspiration for Capella Ubud from the first European settler who came to Indonesia at the turn of the 19th century. The lodge attempts to portray their spirit of adventure by combining European colonial elements with the local Balinese culture.
Capella Ubud’s building, situated in a wild and under-exploited rainforest north of Ubud, near Mount Agung, avoided cutting any trees although some of them had to be relocated and did not survive the transplantation. The tents and facilities are constructed around the trees, which is why no two tents are the same and why in the middle of the room (aka a spa treatment area) or restaurant there is often a tree trunk. The cabin hides in the woods.
