San Diego, CA - Are Your Storefront Signs Failing Health Inspections?

SYNOPSIS: This article covers the signs that can sink a San Diego health inspection, from the grade card and handwashing notices to the No Person Under 21 sign and city permit rules.

The Signs San Diego Inspectors Expect To See

BY: Pete Jackson, Sign Distinction

A storefront sign can cause your business to fail an inspection. Not the look of it. The information on it, or the information missing from it.

In San Diego County, the signs you are required to post are part of what the inspector checks. Skip one, fade one, hide one, and it shows up on the report.

What You Have To Post

The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality, the DEHQ, expects a short list of signs in plain view. Most of it is simple. All of it gets missed at some point.

Your grade card comes first. The A, B, or C from your last inspection must be posted in a conspicuous spot near the public entrance. Not behind a plant. Not taped low by the door handle. Where people see it walking in.

A copy of your most recent routine inspection report has to stay on-site. If a customer asks to see it, you hand it over. No report on hand is its own problem.

Hand sinks need a handwashing sign. Every one of them. Employees wash, the sign says so, and it has to be right there at the sink, not somewhere down the hall.

No smoking signs belong in food prep, storage, and warewashing areas. Posted and clear, not implied.

And if you hold an ABC license with an age restriction, the approved "No Person Under 21 Allowed" sign has to be visible from the outside entrance. That one is literally on your storefront. Miss it, and you have a violation before anyone walks in.

When The Card Turns Red

Routine stuff is one thing. A real hazard is another.

If an inspector finds an imminent health hazard, think major vermin or food held at unsafe temperatures, they pull your grade card and put up a red CLOSED sign in its place. That sign does the talking. Nobody is coming in past it.

And the score does not stay private. The county posts results to SDFoodInfo.org, so anyone can look up where you stand before they pick a spot for lunch.

Worth A Walk-Through

Pick a slow hour and walk your own place like a stranger. Start outside.

Check that:

  • Your grade card is current and easy to spot near the entrance.
  • The latest inspection report is on-site, and you can find it fast.
  • Every hand sink has a readable handwashing sign.
  • No smoking signs are posted in prep, storage, and dish areas.
  • The No Person Under 21 sign, if you need one, shows from the exterior.
  • Exterior sign is permitted and in good repair.

Most of these are cheap to fix and easy to forget. The faded ones, the missing ones, the ones that peeled off months ago. That is the gap between a clean visit and a note on your report.
