In the sections to follow, we will discuss frozen evaporator coils. The goal of this article is to provide some basic information about this common issue to our clients so they know how to determine if they’re experiencing a frozen coil, what to do if they are and how we can help get it repaired quickly.
Signs of a Frozen Coil
Many people are perplexed when their AC unit is still running and air is coming out of the vent but instead of the cool air they expect, they only feel warm air flowing. When the evaporator coil is frozen, no cool air can be produced. This means the home won’t get any cooler and the unit will continually run trying to cool the home, which is bad for energy consumption and for the health of the unit itself.
Cause of a Frozen Coil
AC units create cool air by using a chemical called Freon, AKA refrigerant. Freon is fed into the system via refrigerant lines, and when these lines leak and Freon levels drop it can cause the system to work overtime to cool the home. This overactivity eventually produces ice, which forms over the evaporator coil.
What Steps to Take
If your system is struggling to cool your home and the unit is running nonstop, go check the lines connecting your AC unit to your house. If there is ice present, go back to your thermostat and power the system down completely and then call us to come make the repair. By powering down the system, you allow the ice to melt so we can perform the repair when we arrive.
How the Repair is Made
Our technicians have the right equipment to easily detect the source of the leak and repair it. Once repaired, we can recharge the unit with Freon which should allow it to function normally again.
How to Avoid Freezing Issues
Freon leaks typically start small and get worse over time. To avoid a large leak which results in freezing, regular maintenance is recommended. When we perform maintenance on an AC unit, we check the Freon levels and ensure there are no leaks. If there are, we repair them before they cause an issue.
