Honeywell’s Process Solutions Automation College in Phoenix Arizona was faced with a challenge. The training center hosts students from all over the country and often from around the world. In addition, Honeywell employees get much of their formal product training at the site. Center courses train students on the division’s process control offerings designed to make industrial clients more efficient, safer, and more profitable in their operations. In a move for efficiency with continued excellent service, the college planned to introduce a large electronic digital touch-screen kiosk for student check-in and information. The challenge was to convert the kiosk area from a staffed reception counter to a state-of-the-art inviting self-service staging area.
The college called on Designs Phoenix Signs and Graphics to help with the transformation. A team of Honeywell employees had some excellent conceptual ideas for the space, and Designs Phoenix worked with the team to enhance those ideas and bring them to reality.
The space was first converted from employee cubes to an open area with only one remaining row of offices. That remaining row was separated from the registration space by a half-wall of padded partition borders – effective but a bit unsightly. The plan included a coat of dark gray paint, a detailed custom wallpaper mural of typical customer production sites, laminated 3-D foam letters, and red Plexiglas panels to completely cover the padded partition wall. Additionally, the design included black cabinets with lighted glass doors placed in front of the Plexiglas wall. The plan for the cabinets was to display various division product and service offerings.
Below are before and after photos of the registration area side wall.
The mural consisted of eighteen high resolution photos downloaded from a web photo supplier. The photos were arranged into a collage and the mural was printed in one 52” x 26’ panel. The material was HP PVC-free wall paper produced on our HP25500 latex printer. The wall was covered with five 4’ red Plexiglas panels curved on the top and bottom and attached to the top of the partition wall. The panels were seamed with a 2” strip of aluminum to which the panels were riveted. The seams were covered with 5” curved Plexiglas panels adheared with VHB double-sided tape.
On the wall above the registration kiosk, we used ½” foam 3-D letters to spell out Honeywell Automation College. The Honeywell logo used brushed stainless laminate to tie in the kiosk stainless steel frame. The Automation College letters used red Plexiglas to tie in the red wall. The result is a space that is both functional and impressive to experience. When the black cabinets are added, the space will also promote Honeywell’s process solution client offerings.
A final touch was to add Automation College text in cut, etched vinyl to the large windows of the two doors leading into the training center. Altogether, the transformation was dramatic and effective.
