If you’re getting ready for your first visit to a shooting range, it helps to know what to expect. Our check-in, safety procedures, lane setup, and beginner instruction ensure a safe experience.
This starts with walking you through every step of the check-in process, including what safety equipment you’ll need, as well as what happens once you enter the range. This removes uncertainty and helps you focus on learning.
The first step involves checking in at the front counter with a valid government-issued photo ID. It’s important to dress appropriately for the range: closed-toe shoes, durable pants, and a high-collared shirt. This helps protect your skin from hot brass casings ejected during shooting.
Before stepping onto the range, you’ll need to complete a liability waiver and review our range rules. If it’s your first time visiting an indoor gun range, we might also ask you to watch a brief safety presentation or receive instructions from one of our staff members.
Before entering the live-fire area, you’ll need to use proper eye and hearing protection. Safety glasses protect your eyes from flying debris and potential spent casings, while ear protection reduces the risk of hearing damage. Many new shooters prefer using both earplugs and earmuffs for additional comfort during their first visit.
Safety is our top priority throughout every visit. Our instructors and safety officers always reinforce the four universal firearm safety rules. We teach students to treat every firearm as if it’s loaded and to never point it at anything they do not intend to destroy, to keep their fingers away from the trigger until they’re ready to fire, and to always know their target along with what’s behind it.
After completing check-in, the RSO will assign you a shooting lane. Keep your unloaded, cased firearm on the lane’s bench until you have your safety equipment on and you’re facing downrange.
A lot of first-time shooters are surprised by their first shot. Even with proper hearing protection, the sound and recoil often feel stronger than expected. Fortunately, most nervousness disappears after the first few rounds.
So, we teach new shooters to focus on proper sight alignment, steady breathing, and smooth trigger press. There’s no need to rush each shot. Establishing these core fundamentals early leads to greater confidence and improved accuracy over time.
