When seeking to own a firearm in the state of Arizona, it's critical to know what's required, both on a federal and state level. Because state laws regarding obtaining firearm ownership can drastically vary, becoming familiar with Arizona's specific requirements and restrictions matters.
A common question we hear is, "Do I have to take a concealed carry class to own a firearm in Arizona?"
Not Required for Gun Ownership in Arizona
Arizona residents don't need to take a concealed carry class to obtain firearm ownership. In fact, firearm owners in this state don't legally have to take any type of class or training, nor is there a certain license, permit, or registration necessary to possess a firearm in most cases.
What Is Required for Gun Ownership in Arizona?
While a concealed carry class isn't legally required for firearm owners in Arizona, there are several requirements one must meet:
- Legally allowed to own a firearm under federal law (i.e., not classified as a prohibited possessor for criminal or mental health reasons, illegal U.S. residency, or dishonorable discharge from the military)
- Can pass a background check
- At least 18 years of age (for rifles and shotguns)
- At least 21 years of age (for handguns)
Unlike some other states, Arizona doesn't require a certain waiting period to obtain firearm ownership.
When Taking a Concealed Carry Class Makes Sense
While taking a concealed carry course taught by a certified instructor is not required to own a firearm in Arizona, taking this class is still highly recommended for firearm owners and prospective firearm owners.
In a concealed carry class, participants will learn how to legally, safely, and responsibly carry a concealed weapon. They will be taught how to properly load, unload, and store a gun. They will also learn about the carrying laws, where carrying isn't allowed, and how to physically carry in public.
Concealed carry classes can additionally teach gun owners about self-defense and defense of others, how to determine an imminent threat, and how to avoid escalating situations. Thus, these classes can improve self-defense, personal safety, and reduce legal risk.
