Practical Tips From Phoenix Range Instructors

If you want tighter groups, start with fundamentals; you will repeat every single rep. At C2 Tactical of Phoenix, our instructors focus on simple, proven habits you will apply on day one and refine over time. Here’s how we guide shooters toward consistent accuracy. Build a stable base Accuracy begins at your feet. Set an athletic stance with toes pointed slightly out, shoulders over the balls of your feet, knees soft, and weight forward. Keep your hips square to the target, relax your shoulders, and bring the gun to your eyes, not your head to the gun. Small posture changes will shrink wobble and steady the sight picture. Lock in your grip Use a high, firm grip with both thumbs forward. Drive the web of your shooting hand high under the backstrap, then wrap your support hand so that your fingers fill the open space on the frame. Aim for a pressure split near 60/40 in favor of the support hand. Consistent grip pressure through the entire firing cycle prevents sights from drifting between shots. See what you need to see. Front sight clarity rules slow, precise work; equal height and equal light across the rear notch guide faster strings. For red dots, focus on the target, then float a crisp dot where you want the round to go. If the dot or front blade dances, accept a “good enough” picture for the distance instead of chasing a perfect freeze. Press, don’t jerk Place the pad of your index finger on the trigger and press straight to the rear with steady speed. Keep the rest of your hand quiet. Pin the trigger to the rear as the shot breaks, let it reset under control, then prepare for the next press while reacquiring your sights. Smooth presses stack hits; rushed slaps throw shots low and left for right-handed shooters. Breathe and follow through. Exhale gently, pause, press, and keep eyes on the sights through recoil. Call the shot in your head before you look at the target. Honest shot calling turns every round into feedback for the next rep. Drills we love on the range Start close. At three to five yards, run five-shot groups into a 2–3 inch circle. When groups hold tight, step back in small increments. Add cadence work: one shot per second with the same sight picture every press. For recoil control, try controlled pairs—two accurate shots with a clear sight return between. Keep a notebook to track distance, drills, and group size, allowing you to monitor your progress. Dry practice between visits Unloaded firearm, safe space, no ammo in the room. Use a wall drill: align sights on a blank wall and press without sight movement. Ten perfect presses a night will pay off on your next live session. Snap caps will add value for reset work and clearing practice. When instruction helps most If you see the same miss over several sessions, coaching will save time and ammo. Our private lessons and small group classes will quickly diagnose grip pressure, trigger path, and vision issues, then provide you with homework that you will actually use. First-time shooters, returning competitors, and experienced shooters will all benefit from focused guidance. Women looking for a supportive environment will find dedicated programs led by experienced female instructors. Make practice intentional Bring a plan, run two or three drills well, and finish with a confidence string you know you will crush. Quality reps outperform marathon sessions without structure. Ready to level up? Our Phoenix team will tailor instruction to your goals, schedule, and experience. Check our calendar for private lessons, simulator sessions, and group classes, or stop by the range to meet one of our instructors. We will help you shoot with confidence, one solid rep at a time.
