Is the VP9 worth the hefty price for the HK name?

Contrary to popular belief, Glock did not produce the first striker fired pistol. It was actually Heckler Koch with the VP70 pistol. From then to now, HK has continued to produce these including the VP9 pistol that we will review here. This is HK’s first modern striker fired pistol.

The value of the VP9 is contestable. While you will no doubt spend a bit more for the HK name, the features that come with this pistol are mostly fair for the price you pay compared to other pistols in this category.

The VP9 Build

The VP9 is a 9mm pistol with a barrel length of about 4” and a weight of 25 ounces. The trigger is built to be 5.4 pounds pull with a 24” travel and a 12” reset. The crisp break and short reset help to increase the positive experiences and shootability of this pistol.

The build of the VP9 is meant to be extremely comfortable and customizable with interchangeable grip panels. You can essentially make this pistol fit like a glove to your hand with a combination of the 6 different grip panels and 3 different backstraps. However, due to the slightly larger size of this pistol, many people find it too big and bulky to carry as a concealed weapon for personal defense.

Performance and Reliability

Of course the most important part of any firearm is the performance and reliability. With a striker fired pistol you can almost assume that it will be a reliable gun, able to push through many rounds of ammo without malfunctioning or needing to be cleaned.

With a consistent and predicatable recoil it is a great option for newer shooters that are looking to get more familiar with a 9mm handgun. Plus, with the interchangeable grip panels small and large handed shooters can both use it well. Overall, the grip, trigger, sights, and recoil make this a great gun to shoot.

Magazines and Accessory

One of the most talked about aspects of the HK VP9 is the magazine, more specifically the magazine release. On the VP9 the magazine release is the traditional paddle, however on the updated version of the VP9-B, it is a push button magazine release. This is much easier to handle than the paddle version, especially when in the firing grip making reload much faster. Depending on the model and year of the HK VP9 pistol you purchase a magazine can hold either 15 or 17 rounds, plenty for a handgun.

In terms of aftermarket accessories, the options are not awful, but they are not comparable to other firearms like the Glock 19. If you are someone that likes to heavily modify your firearms with aftermarket products, then this is not the pistol for you.

However there are a few options for things like sights. While the sights are sufficient, you really are stuck to a few tritium options instead of the variety that other pistols offer. You are likely to find something that you like and works well, but the pistol is most likely not compatible with your favorite sights set.
