Tempe, AZ - Are You Struggling With Public Speaking as a Business Leader?

SYNOPSIS: Plenty of capable leaders freeze in front of a room. Danny Creed shares a practical checklist for turning public speaking from a weakness into a strength.

The Leader Who Dreads the Podium

BY: Danny Creed, Danny Creed
Many leaders I coach can run a tense negotiation without blinking and then lose sleep over a ten-minute talk to their own staff. If speaking in front of a room tightens your chest, you're in ordinary company, and the good news is plain: public speaking is a skill, not a personality trait. Skills are installed through practice. I've coached people who arrived convinced they simply weren't "speakers" and left able to hold a room with a steadiness they didn't know they had. I want to be useful, so here's a working checklist. Treat it as habits to build, not rules to memorize. Get the fundamentals right first. Everything else follows. Summarize exactly how you want your audience to react or change after you speak. If you cannot boil your message down to a single sentence, your listeners will never grasp the point. I start every coaching session with this step because knowing your goal stops the panic before it begins.

Build the open and the close first

The middle of a talk is forgiving. The first thirty seconds and the last thirty are not. Script your opening word-for-word so you launch from solid ground instead of improvising while adrenaline spikes. Script your close the same way, because a strong landing is what people carry out of the room.

Practice out loud, not in your head

Rehearsing silently builds false confidence. Saying the words aloud, ideally standing, reveals the clumsy phrasing and the breath you forgot to take. I have clients practice a hard delivery, a price increase, a tough update, a high-stakes pitch, until it sounds like them on their best day. Reps are the whole game. Take your time intentionally. Anxiety makes people rush. Try a simple trick. Pick three spots to stop, take a breath, and let your message sink in. Great public speaking usually comes down to staying relaxed and taking your time. Prepare for that one scary question. Stage fright often boils down to worrying about a single tough question. Spot the problem first. Then, walk through a composed and direct explanation. Facing your biggest fear makes every other problem look small. Remember that posture carries half the conversation. Balance your weight. Open your palms. Forget the tech. Watch where you look because that is where your effort goes. Keep your posture steady. This physical choice calms your nerves and proves you are in charge. This work shows up in real careers. One coach I worked with had built a successful corporate career, then went out on his own and discovered he lacked several survival skills an entrepreneur needs, public speaking among them. We treated it like any other skill, drilled it, and turned a liability into something he could rely on. Speaking ability rarely arrives as a gift. It gets built. A coach earns the role for a simple reason. You can't see your own habits clearly while you're inside them, and you won't push yourself as hard as someone whose job is to push. I've spent a career teaching communication and sales, and confident speaking sits at the center of both. Tempe runs on pitches, presentations, and the meetings where careers quietly turn, and the leaders who command those rooms tend to be the ones who practiced when no one was watching. The podium stops being a threat once you've earned your footing on it. I'm Danny Creed, Certified Master Coach with more than 15,000 logged hours of coaching. Pick one upcoming talk you're dreading, and we'll build your preparation around it on a no-cost call.
