I can be sitting across from a one-man-band consultant or the owner of twelve stores; it doesn’t matter. Sooner or later, the same worry creeps into the conversation: “Why should anyone pick me?”
Answer that in one clean sentence, and the rest gets easier: marketing writes itself, sales calls shorten, and you can finally charge what you’re worth.
Step 1: Hunt the Real Ache
Most owners lead with the tool, not the hole in the wall. Landscaper? You’re not selling “weekly mows.” You’re selling the feeling of pulling into the driveway and thinking, “Yep, we’ve got our act together.” Consultant? You’re not selling “strategy sessions.” You’re selling sleep: six extra months of it because the owner finally knows what to do next.
Ask three customers what keeps them up at night. Word their answer exactly how they say it. That’s the first brick of your proposition.
Step 2: Glue Emotion to the Outcome
People buy the epilogue, not the chapter titles. Finish this line aloud: “After working with us, clients feel
because they can finally____.” If you can’t say it without smiling, keep editing until you can.
Step 3: Show the Receipts
Proof beats adjectives every time. “Doubled revenue in a year,” “Cut churn 30%,” “Gave the founder Saturdays back”—these are your receipts. Stick them on your home page, LinkedIn banner, and the back of your business card. Let the numbers talk so you don’t have to brag.
Step 4: Teach the Chorus
Once the line sings, make the whole team learn the lyrics. Receptionist, installer, intern, everyone. Same greeting, same headline, same slide one. Repetition turns a cute slogan into a reputation.
Last Call
Don’t think of your value prop as a tattoo; think of it as a haircut. Revisit it every six months, trim what’s grown shaggy, and let it mature with the business.
The moment you stop listing services and start promising a better night’s sleep, the conversation changes, from “How much?” to “When can we start?”
