SYNOPSIS: Discover how to go from spectator to key player in business and life with tips from a seasoned Business Coach on overcoming fear and embracing challenges.

Embrace Life: Play the Game of Business

BY: Danny Creed, FocalPoint Coaching of Arizona

We all know people who seem to live life to the fullest. They pursue their dreams with gusto, take risks, and squeeze every drop of joy and adventure from their time on this planet. Just being around them sparks our sense of possibility.

Then, some stand on the sidelines and watch others live vibrant, engaged lives while they play it safe. Their reluctance to jump into life’s messy fray means missed growth opportunities.

I see this dynamic play out in my work as a business coach. Some entrepreneurs thrive on high-stakes challenges and constantly push boundaries. Others prefer analyzing spreadsheets from the comfort of their desks. Both leadership styles can bring success, but one approach leaves you vastly more fulfilled.

So, how do you shift from spectator to player in the game of business and life? As a Certified Master Business Coach and recipient of the Brian Tracy Award for Sales Excellence who has advised dozens of high-achieving leaders, I have some thoughts:

Tune Out the Inner Critic

Fear often holds us back – fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of embarrassment. The voice of self-doubt shouts so loudly that we turn down adventures that might enrich us. Learn to challenge your inner critic rather than let it scare you into complacency.

Surround Yourself with Doers

Our social circles can pull us in or deflate us. Make it a priority to be around passionate people who inspire you rather than those clinging to the status quo. Their joie de vivre is contagious.

Start Small

You don’t have to sell everything and move to Tibet to be considered “in the game.” Little steps outside your comfort zone count. Speak up more at meetings. Explore a creative hobby on weekends. Train for a 5K when you’ve never been a runner. Small acts of courage beget bigger ones.

Don’t Let Setbacks Stop You

Players get back up after being knocked down. Failures are data points that show you what not to do next time. Rather than let them break you, use them as springboards to try again with renewed resolve.

The choice between engaging in life or watching from the sidelines is deeply personal. And it doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. You can be fiercely in the arena, pursuing some dreams while tentatively testing others.

But overall, fulfillment correlates strongly with participation. Don’t let fear keep you from chasing adventures that light you up. As the iconic Theodore Roosevelt quote goes: “The glory lies not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall.”

The game is on. Now, get out there and play.

As a Certified Executive Coach with a Ph.D. in GSD and over 15 years of experience working with top entrepreneurs and executives, I’ve helped many business leaders infuse more passion and engagement into their personal and professional pursuits. If you feel it’s time to step onto the playing field, let’s discuss your goals. I promise it will be time well played.
