As a seasoned business coach in Glendale, I am often asked, “Do you have your coach?” My resounding answer: Absolutely! I have always invested in my mentorship in 16 years of guiding executives, leaders, and businesses to new heights.
In this article, I’ll explore why seeking outside perspectives enhances coaches’ personal growth and professional excellence in any domain. My lessons learned can help coaches at all levels realize their full potential.
Gain Impartial Insights on Blindspots
The founder of leadership coaching, Sir John Whitmore, wisely stated: “Coaching is unlocking people’s potential to maximize their own performance.”
As coaches, we support clients by illuminating blindspots and reframing challenges into opportunities. Yet, as experts in human performance, we even need impartial insights to recognize our biases and break through limiting beliefs. By definition, we cannot see our own blindspots without assistance.
My own business coaching provides me with mirrors I cannot hold up for myself. My coach asks thoughtful questions to expand my self-awareness and perception. Often, the best solutions arise from our dialogues diagnosing situations I have become too close to analyze objectively alone. Seeking outside wisdom is not surrendering your capabilities but unlocking them fully.
Maintain Leading-Edge Skills with Continuous Learning
Like the professionals we support, coaches must embrace lifelong learning to remain effective. Accessing fellow experts provides built-in opportunities for skill-building beyond our addiction to self-study.
My coach exposes me to alternative frameworks, evolving best practices, and new modalities outside my traditional toolbox. Our rich exchanges enhance my own coaching lens and models to empower my clients better over the long term.
Practice What We Preach as Mentees
The expression goes: Teachers have the loudest lessons to learn. Coaches face the same reality check. We ubiquitously extol the virtues of vulnerability, accountability, emotional intelligence, and human-centered connection with clients. But living these values ourselves takes humility and conscious practice.
By receiving coaching, we walk the talk we inspire in others. My coach provides me with a safe space to show up authentically, name my challenges, and integrate constructive feedback. The experience fuels my empathy and compassion as a mentor.
We cannot take clients further than we have journeyed ourselves. Let us lead by example.
