Did you hear the one about the chicken and the pig who were drinking in a bar one night when the chicken said, “Hey, why don't we go into business together?” We could open a ham and egg restaurant. “Not so fast, said the pig. For you, it's just a day's work. For me, it's a matter of life and death.” Look, the chicken went to work every day, did his job, and then went home. The pig, however, when he went to work, knowing that to be appreciated, he'd have to sacrifice everything. Look, I'm constantly preaching to anyone who will listen to the importance of understanding exactly, precisely, what it means to be an entrepreneur. Far too many people start a business only to learn that knowing how to do something does not make you a business person. Most are fabulous, what I'll call a technician, yet absolutely stakes the place up as a business person. Just because you were a huge success in corporate doesn't mean that you'll be successful in an entrepreneurial landscape. It's much different when you don't have the money or the big support structure. But here's the skinny. Being an entrepreneur is not right for everybody. So before you dive into something, drop the ego and ask yourself the hard questions. Be honest with your answers, and be perfectly sure that you're willing to do what you need to do when you need to do it. And over and over and over again. Some people are okay with that, and they actually thrive on it, while others just need the security of clocking in, doing their job, and then clocking out. There's nothing wrong with that, either. But just be sure which is right for you. Okay? To be a successful entrepreneur, you'll need to have the mentality of the pig. When you're putting your life, your time, and your money into a business venture, it literally can be a decision that can have a lifetime effect on you everyone around you personally, professionally, and financially.
