The Power of Silence: Sales Success with Dan Creed

Phoenix, AZ - Video: Sales Training Advice from a Master Business Coach
In a compelling episode of 'Straight Talk on Business,’ renowned business coach Dan Creed imparts a fundamental yet transformative piece of sales advice: learn to listen.

Revolutionize Sales through Silence

According to Dan Creed, excessive talking is a common pitfall many salespeople fall into. As human beings, we’re wired to communicate and express our thoughts and ideas, and this is especially true in a sales context. However, the actual sales gem lies in mastering the art of silence and honing your listening skills. This simple yet profound shift in approach can lead to significantly enhanced sales outcomes.

Leveraging Technology in Sales

The rise of technology has exponentially increased access to information, creating a generation of informed consumers who have little patience for a salesperson's constant persuasion. The technological advancements at our disposal require salespeople to ask and clarify their clients' needs before speaking to those specific requirements. This approach, termed 'solution selling,’ is pivotal in today's digital age.

Fostering World-Class Listening Skills

Being a world-class listener is a prerequisite in the modern sales landscape. A salesperson's job is not to boast about their qualifications or skills but to understand and respond to the customer's needs. Forgoing this critical understanding is a recipe for wasted time and lost potential.

The 'Question Phase' of Selling

Creed champions the question phase of selling. It's not about pitching yourself mindlessly to every prospect but about discerning whether there's a genuine fit. By posing thoughtful questions and listening attentively to responses, salespeople can discern whether a business relationship would benefit both parties. Embracing the power of silence can revolutionize your sales process. You may discover an untapped potential that could transform the trajectory of your sales by taming your tongue, asking the right questions, and actively listening. Hi, this is business coach Dan Creed. Thanks for joining us on Straight Talk on Business.  If you're selling anything, I have just one piece of advice. That's right, one— that'll make you more money than you could ever imagine. Here we go, write it down:  Tame the tongue. Shut up. Please just shut up. Stop the yapping and listen! If you're in any level of sales, you have to learn to tame your tongue. Just learn to stop talking at some point and allow the prospect or client to tell you what they want, and they will tell you how to sell them. They will tell you these things. If you just shut up and listen, the reality is that everyone has a communication device of some kind. And as part of the available tools on that advice are apps like Google that allow the listener to access any type or amount of information they want nearly instantaneously, whether you're just a user or a listener or you're reading it. And with that ability, people simply don't need or don't want to be told anything. However, the biggest mistake that salespeople have ever made over the millennium and continue to make is that they tell, tell and tell some more about why you should listen to them and buy from them.  If anything, technology forces the smart salesperson to first ask questions— seeking and verifying the needs of that client. And then, and only then, to speak to those specific needs. That’s solution selling at its finest. There simply is no tolerance for anything else today. More than at any other time in history, prospects and clients are requiring that for them to be your customer, you must be a world-class listener. It's kind of a theme I have around here. Anything less— they don't need or don't want you wasting their time. And if you're honest with yourself, you know it is a waste of time. How in the world can you expect to earn the right to work for someone if your entire sales value story is telling them how thick your resume is and all the things that you can do for them? And all of this bragging when you don't even know what their needs are? It may be one of the talents that you bring to the table but don't make them set through your grocery list of skills hoping that they might hear something they like. Believe me, if they're nice, they're acting like they're listening, but in reality, they've shut you off long ago. But I'm teaching people how to up their sales game. A Hallmark of my course is always the question phase of selling. My go-to killer statement is simple and short. After initial greetings, I will always say, you know: I'm not right for everybody. So what I'd really like to do is ask you a few questions and in the end will tell me and, more importantly, you if it makes any sense that we should be working together. It’s amazing, just go back and listen to that again because it's a powerful question. It works every time.  When I learned to tame my tongue, ask questions, and shut up and listen, my entire career changed.  But if you don't agree, that's ok. Keep talking and telling. In fact, let me know where you're going to be because I want to follow you around, and I guarantee you that I will get the business.  Thanks for joining us today. I'm business coach Dan Creed. If you need some help with your personal and business development, go to my website, I'd be glad to help. There are a lot of resources there, and you can send me a note.
