INTRO:

THE CLIENT:
Entrepreneurism is one of those career paths that end up being so different than what we originally thought. I think in almost every business book I’ve read about an entrepreneur; some point is made about it being a lot more work than anticipated.
Where I see a lot of start ups and entrepreneurs fall short is the depth of clarity they have about their business. Sure, you may have a fantastic product or service, but do you know how to build it, how to hire a qualified team, raise money, maximize profits, etc.? When you have clarity, you can answer all these questions easily. The type of clarity needed for an entrepreneur is written down. This type of clarity does not have any gray areas. You may know it by a different name, a business plan. It will be nearly impossible for any new business to secure bank or Angel investors without a clear business plan. Otherwise, those investors think you are going to be too big of a risk; they like to know how their money is going to be spent. Possibly more importantly, they want to know how you can grow their money with your product.
My client fell into the trap that so many do that is not writing a solid business plan that has been examined and challenged by another experienced and successful entrepreneur. In fact, he had a one-page description of the product/service he wanted to create, and the rest was “in his head.”
THE SOLUTION:
I am no stranger with helping startups get off the ground, I have helped 14+ new businesses gain the clarity they need to make it. I know that the abundance of clarity or complete lack thereof has been the difference maker in whether or not they succeed.
I started off my partnership with this client by having him complete a Clarity Module that I created. It consists of 62 questions that helps identify gaps in the plan and where we should focus our time. Once we analyzed the results together, we determined that we needed to create: a solid marketing and sales plan, a powerful marketing message, a succinct value proposition, a positioning statement, a very specific target audience, and much more.
The Clarity Module was extremely valuable to my client. He even ended up reevaluating things he thought he could cross of his list. For example, the target audience we notated ended up being completely different than the one he originally identified.
THE RESULT:
Together, we spent all of our efforts in creating the most concise and attractive business plan we could muster. We had a successful initial roll-out and almost immediately started attracting Angel investors. My client even attracted big name potential customers early on like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), Intel and RCA.
If my client was not willing to enlist the perspective of someone like me who knows how to create a meaningful business plan, he very likely would not have received the fundraising necessary to move forward with his dream.
