INTRO:

THE CLIENT:
My client made the leap to become a franchisee. The business he invested in required a lot of cold calling sales. Sometimes this is referred to more eloquently as “direct marketing.” This type of work is typically a grind. It entails a lot of the door to door and business to business kind of selling. Unfortunately, the business he franchised provided him a very minimal amount of training. It also did not offer much in terms of ongoing support. After investing close to $100,000 in this new and exciting business venture, he quickly realized he was completely on his own. He was frustrated and nervous that he may have made a big mistake in investing so much money. How was he ever going to turn a profit? Ultimately, he decided that if the business was not going to provide help, he would seek out an objective third party on his own. That’s when my client asked me for my analysis and advice.
THE SOLUTION:
Whenever I meet with a client, I like to do a deep dive into their business. I want to know where they are succeeding, where they are falling short, and most importantly, what they are wanting out of this partnership. This client was not sure what he wanted right away, which is not uncommon, he just knew he wanted and needed help.
The first thing we did was examine what would be required to resurrect the business, and how much effort it would take. The goal here was to save his investment the best we could. We went through what is called the Clarity Process, which is a very rational and pragmatic way to approach roadblocks and ultimately decided to not try to grow the business. Instead, we made the difficult, but correct, decision to create an exit strategy for him.
We liquidated what we were able to, created a value proposition for potential buyers and started to market the business.
THE RESULT:
As a result of our meticulous planning and all of the work my client did to create an appealing proposition, we accomplished our goal. Not too long after we went to market did the business sell to another franchisee. This individual wanted to expand into multiple areas and my client’s option fit perfectly into what he was needing. Without a second thought, we were happy to accept this offer.
After everything was said and done, my client got the majority of his investment back due to the sell. Sometimes business ventures do not work out, even for the most competent and able of business owners. It is important when becoming a franchisee that you pick the right fit for your skills and interests. There’s also nothing embarrassing about enlisting help. I’m so glad my client decided to call me and we were able to work together to avoid him losing a fortune. We had such a successful experience that my client is comfortable moving forward and jumping into a new career path.
