Chabad is today one of the world’s most recognized Jewish Chasidic movements. It is well know for outreach. Organizationally, it may be the largest Jewish religious organization in the world with over 3000 locations in 65 countries. The Chabad story is fascinating, it is birthed out of oppression in Eastern Europe.
Chabad at La Costa built a new synagogue on a sliver of land off La Costa Avenue. About 65 families are members and many of them walk to this synagogue. The synagogue itself is beautiful. It has views on the lagoon, along with a functional and classic layout. It was also hidden in plain sight. Nobody other than the members knew what that new building actually was. They wanted to change that
La Costa has a style, from the La Costa Country Club to the mall at La Costa, and La Costa Towne Center all use a specific letter style – The use a reverse channel letter Carlsbad CA does not see many of these because it is a higher level of sign construction than the norm. They also you a serif font, that has impact, but is more difficult to build.
What is a Reversed Channel Letter? This has a couple of names: Halo Channel Letter, (Halo Lit Channel Letter) and back lit channel letter. All these mean the same thing. The face is solid metal and the backs are open. The LEDs (Light source) are mounted on a clear piece of plastic about an inch away from the wall. These have brackets on them and the letter is placed over the plastic on the brackets. They “stand off” the wall by about an inch.
In typography a serif is the small part of the letter that really represents the brush turning, contacting or leaving the paper. It adds a distinction to the letter and the a style element. These are narrow, often curved parts of the letter that are hard to light and hard to shape. The Chabad halo lit channel letter set was largely built by hand so these serifs would come out correctly and still be light able. Most channel letters are front lite – and san serif. That is the lighted part is the front or face and the san (no or without) serif style means they are block letters.
At Signs for San Diego we are pretty excited about this project. It is special for a number of reasons. The construction of these letters, the installation was tricky and the match to the area was important. We got all of these right. It also was an honor to do this job for such an important group. To have Chabad trust us with their branding and identity was a privilege and we truly appreciate the faith they put in us.
