The router itself is like a drill, uses a bit. This bit is also called an end mill. It is a rotating blade, that cuts hard materials like wood, acrylic, PVC and other materials. The end mill can be a number of different sizes and the speed of the router also changes. A 1/8 inch or 1/5 inch double fluted end mill is common.
A CNC router has a table with a positioning system on it. The positioning system can move in X Y and Z. It does this very accurately. The CNC router takes a computer file and reads it into a path to cut. This can be the outline of a letter, shape or pattern.
