Clark Pest Control has been around sense just after World War Two. It was founded by returning GIs and started here in Lodi California. It has been nearly 70 years now. The company started with a single location but now has locations all over California and many in Nevada as well. One of these locations near Miramar was in need Building Signs.
The original building signs were well done, but they were old. There were 2 original signs and these needed to be replaced with 4 building signs. There were 3 primary reasons for the change
I. The Building Signs on the entryway were pealing. Vinyl comes in 2 general classifications, Cast and Calendared. These last for years, but cast will last about twice as long. Also over the past 20 years all vinyl have improved. So it was not hard to see this is an older vinyl and was delaminating, that is – the vinyl and adhesive were failing
II. The existing Building Signs used an older logo and were faded. That is the sun has washed out the colors and the logo colors did not match the original intent or the current intent. We matched the colors with a latex ink on a 3M good quality vinyl and a laminate with UV protection. Why? The customer wanted a very white background provided by the vinyl and a color application that would not fad. The UV protection, the Latex inks and the premium vinyl will all contribute to a long life for this sign.
III. The last problem was the size of 2 of the 4 signs. 2 or them were 12 feet. That is longer than most available materials. Most materials come in 8 or 10 feet, but 12 is a challenge for a single piece construction. The other 2 signs were 8 foot by 2 foot and we had a different material solution for these 2 building signs.
We used a Sandwich panel (DiBond) for the two 8 foot signs. These are made out of a sandwich of Aluminum and thermoplastic polycarbonate composite panel structure. This is lighter than Aluminum and it resists dents, will not crack or decompose over time. It is a common outdoor sign material and we use a lot of it. We would have used it for the other 2 larger signs, but there was a problem. It was not available in lengths over 10 feet. Also, panel saws, table saws and other cutters are not commonly built for lengths over 10 feet.
We used a rolled thermoplastic polycarbonate (Lexan) on the 12 foot sections. This is heavier than the DiBond, it is also non-rigid. That is Lexan bends and is much harder to use, cut and place than DiBond. It is also about five times as expensive. However, polycarbonate are durable. It is in sports helmets, windows of aircraft and headlight lenses. It will take a lot of abuse and resist cracking, or other damage for years. We wrapped this panel the same was we wrapped the 8 foot building signs. That is in 3M vinyl, Latex Inks and a UV Laminate.
Clark Pest Control’s building signs stand out. They are whiter than the others, the ink color is brighter and the materials are better. One photo here shows the old sign vs. the new sign and this difference can be seen,
Clark Pest Control has delivered superior service for 70 years and part of the need for Building Signs was to double the space on site. They needed 4 signs to replace the 2 old signs and place signage on the new space.
The old signs have their own history. These were put up by the Clark family many years ago. We carefully removed these for return to the ground and to the family. Their future may be very different. With the nostalgic value of these original building signs they are looking for a good reuse opportunity. It is unclear if these signs will become a part of the warehouse wall or be re tasked in the ceiling, but they now have a new live as a reminded of the past.
Signs for San Diego is happy to be a small part in Clark Pest Control’s continued growth in our region. It is a pleasure to work with companies like Clark Pest Control that have long and consistently served our communities.
