Lafayette, CA – How To Help Calm My Child’s Nervous System Using Acupressure

SYNOPSIS: When children are struggling with behavioral issues often their nervous system is constantly elevated. Acupressure and herbal medicine can reduce nervous system strain to help your child feel better.

Acupressure can calm your child’s nervous system

BY: JANET THOMSON, Inspire Family Acupuncture
One of the most important ways that we help families is by supporting children who are chronically stressed, anxious, angry, overwhelmed, and/or overstimulated. Chinese medicine is highly effective at calming the nervous system, helping children feel calm in their bodies rather than overly excited. In case you don’t remember… being a child is not easy! Children suffer a world of stimulation and difficult situations whether they are in preschool or elementary school and beyond. These can include:
  • Sibling concerns and the need for attention
  • Interpersonal dynamics with peers (including hitting/biting/name calling incidents)
  • High levels of noise and activities in learning environments
  • Learning to hear “no” and handle frustration
  • Expectations for how they are supposed to act in certain situations (such as prolonged sitting and quiet activities at school) and how quickly they are supposed to move through transitions
Additional issues that can contribute to nervous system dysregulation can include undiagnosed food sensitivities or allergies, undiagnosed sleep/breathing challenges, and/or undiagnosed learning difficulties. These factors can contribute to a child feeling overwhelmed, uncomfortable inside, frustrated, volatile, irritable, or generally overstimulated. Chinese medicine can address many of these factors – and best of all, acupressure for children is a wonderfully relaxing, massage-like experience. We typically do not use acupuncture needles on the children in our practice because that level of stimulation is typically not necessary. (Needles are optional for teen clients). How Does It Work? When a child begins work with us, whether they are three years old or thirteen years old, we begin with a show and tell of the tools we’ll use. We show them our soft silicone cups that we may use on their back to calm anxiety and tension. We show small stones and acupressure tools that we can use to gently rub or press the skin. We show moxibustion which can be used to strengthen a weakened, tired system. We show ear seeds which create long-term pressure on acupressure spots on the earlobe. We allow the children to play with the tools so that they’re intrigued to begin their session. After chatting with their caregiver about what’s going on, we feel the pulse in the child’s wrist and then look at the child’s tongue. By this point we will have a diagnosis for what’s happening for this particular child and we can begin the acupressure treatment. Children typically start the sessions feeling curious and taking a look at each activity we do, but once they get the hang of it they often become mellow and sometimes even drowsy. Parents typically report that children sleep more deeply the night after their session. Often a change in behavior starts after the first session, even if starts in small ways. If you’re interested to begin your family’s journey with pediatric Chinese medicine you can book online with Inspire Family Acupuncture or call us with any questions you might have. Here’s to your health!
