If you’re an athlete, you’re on your feet all day at work, or you’re a busy parent, you may find that your calves are always tight. No matter how hard you try to stretch them by stepping off a stair or pressing your foot against the wall, your calves are still always tense.
Calves can be a difficult part of the body to release on our own – they don’t respond well to foam rolling and calf stretching and Epsom salt baths can be insufficient.
Thankfully, acupuncture, gua sha, and cupping are three fabulous tools to unwind chronically tight calf muscles and help you enjoy your activities without the pain and tension.
What Does Cupping Do?
Cupping is an ancient therapy that is essentially a reverse massage. Instead of the pushing down motion of massages, the suction of the cups pulls the layers of tight muscles apart. This releases muscle adhesions and improves the flow of blood and lymph through the tight tissues. Clients usually feel a deep sense of relief through the cupping process, as areas that were stuck and tight finally have free circulation and restored range of motion.
What Does Gua Sha Do?
Gua sha is a technique using a smooth-edged stone to gently stroke the skin to release adhesions and improve circulation from the fascia, connective tissue, and muscle layers. While cupping works at a fairly deep muscular level, gua sha can be used to release tension from the connective tissue and fascia to improve circulation near the skin layer as well. We find that gua sha works especially well in nooks and crannies like the neck/shoulder transition, the calves, and the soles and arches of the feet.
What Does Acupuncture Do?
When used for pain management, acupuncture can directly release tight muscles by causing the muscle to twitch and release. It also brings improved circulation to the painful area and causes the brain to release endorphins which lower the pain sensation.
How Do These Techniques Work Together?
When you use acupuncture, gua sha, and cupping to release tight calves, the healing happens at multiple levels – both muscular and connective tissue. While acupuncture calms the body, reduces pain sensations, and triggers the release of tight muscles, the cupping and gua sha enable improved circulation of blood and lymph and release of cellular waste products.
