During the height of seasonal allergy season we often see clients who are using multiple pharmaceutical medications and still not finding sufficient relief from the sinus congestion, itching face, runny eyes and nose, and postnasal-drip induced cough.
Acupuncture on its own, or in combination with herbal medicine, can substantially reduce the impact of seasonal allergies and help you enjoy the outdoors again.
Are you wondering how acupuncture works to reduce allergy symptoms? Here are the four major ways:
- Acupuncture can reduce production of mucus. When certain acupuncture points are used, acupuncture can reduce the body’s production of mucus. One of the most difficult aspects of prolonged seasonal allergies is the sinus congestion, runny nose, and/or postnasal drip that comes with the overactive immune response. Acupuncture can reduce all those symptoms.
- Acupuncture can be used to drain the sinuses. Whether the sinuses are clogged in the front of the face or all the way out towards the ears, specific acupuncture points are used to open the sinuses and drain fluids out. Many clients find significant relief when these acupuncture points are stimulated.
- Acupuncture can be used to reduce itching. There are several acupuncture points that are specifically indicated for itching, and these can be used effectively to reduce the itchy aspect of seasonal allergies.
- Acupuncture can help overcome fatigue. For long-term allergy sufferers, one of the most troubling aspects is the exhaustion that comes along with severe allergies. Acupuncture and other Chinese medicine tools such as moxibustion can substantially increase the body’s energy to decrease feelings of fatigue.
- Nasal rinsing with a saline spray;
- Showering and changing clothes after spending time outdoors;
- Frequent washing of pillowcases;
- Diffusing essential oils such as thyme, mint, rosemary, and/or tea tree oil, that can assist with opening the sinuses; and
- Using an air purifier in the house or at least in the bedroom to reduce pollen exposure.
