Oakland, CA – Need Immune System Hacks? Use This Acupuncturist’s Tips for Health

BY: JANET THOMSON, Inspire Family Acupuncture

As we’re grappling with a resurgence of the pandemic, many of us are trying everything we can to keep our immune system in top working order. Do you want a few easy-to-use tips to incorporate your routine at home that can keep you and your family at top health? Read on to find out what this acupuncturist recommends for immune system health.

Herbal Power

Did you know that many common kitchen herbs are powerhouses for the immune system? The following herbs having antimicrobial properties – some are antibacterial, some antiviral, some antifungal, and some are combinations of those three. Consider adding basil, chives, cilantro, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, and/or thyme to your cooking routine! The easiest and best way to increase your health benefit from these herbs is to buy a bunch or two of fresh herbs each week from the grocery store. In the morning, wash and chop up a small amount of one or two of the herbs, and sprinkle them on top of your finished meal. Your whole family can enjoy the visual spectacle of the herbs, the bursting fresh flavor, and the security of knowing you’re improving your health with this small addition to your routine.

Scent Power

Research has shown that smelling certain essential oils can actually cause an increase in production of various immune system cells. Yes, it’s true! If you enjoy having some scents in your home or office, purchase an essential oil diffuser (which you can purchase for as little as $10-$20) and one or more of the following essential oils: eucalyptus, hinoki cedar, and/or ginger. Use the diffuser’s instructions to diffuse the scent of one of these oils while you work, relax, or sleep, and receive the healing benefits.

Nature Power

Researchers in southeast Asia have found that “forest bathing” carries a whole host of health benefits including immune system support. Forest bathing is spending a period of time (ideally at least an hour or two) in a forest, actively engaging all the senses. Have a seat or take a walk in a forested park. Focus on the scent of the trees and the leaves and the earth, listen to birdsong and the crunch of leaves underfoot, feel the tree bark as you walk, and use your eyes to take in all of your surroundings from big to small. Forest bathing is shown to lower stress, reduce blood pressure, and yes, enhance immune cell production.

I hope these tips help to keep you healthy and strong during this winter season! If you feel that you need more immune system support, call me for an herbal consultation or an acupuncture session. Here’s to your health!
