Oakland, CA – Chinese Herbal Medicine to Support COVID-19 Prevention

BY: JANET THOMSON, Inspire Family Acupuncture

During this coronavirus pandemic, many of us are trying to find as many resources as possible to help us prevent disease. Below are disease prevention practices and Chinese herbs that can help you during the coming weeks and months.

Disease Prevention Practices

Research has found that the best things you can do to support your immune system are:

  • Get sufficient sleep (at least 7-8 hours of high-quality sleep for adults)
  • Eat a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Lower your stress levels (notably easier said than done)
  • Get moderate exercise for 20-30 minutes at least 3-4 times per week

During this pandemic you’ll also want to wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water any time you come into contact with foreign surfaces or people outside of those you live with. Aim to stop touching your face – especially your mouth, nose, and eyes. And lastly, practice social distancing by remaining at least six feet from people outside of your house.

Disease Prevention Herbs

Research seems to indicate that zinc, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D may all be helpful in supporting healthy immune function. If you are able to eat a varied diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, you should already get enough Vitamin C. If you are able to get 15-30 minutes of mid-day sunshine several times a week, you may get enough Vitamin D. Zinc is commonly found in whole grains, red meat and poultry, baked beans, chickpeas, nuts, and some milk products. If you suspect you are lacking in those natural sources, you can consider supplementation.

Astragalus root

Chinese medicine has several herbal remedies that pharmacologists have demonstrated to stimulate the immune system and have antiviral properties. The primary immune-enhancing herb in Chinese medicine is astralagus root. This herb is typically prescribed in a variety of multi-herb formulas to ensure that its effects are most appropriate for each patient. One formula contains astragalus root along with two antimicrobial herbs to support the body in fighting infections. Another formula contains astragalus root along with digestive herbs, since healthy gut function is related to healthy respiratory function (key during this coronavirus).

While many of us are already sufficiently protected by our daily practices and social distancing, some of us know that our immune systems or respiratory systems are already weakened. If you suspect that you need additional help with your immune system, please contact me for an herbal medicine consultation by phone.
