Oakland, CA – Addressing Childhood Insomnia with Acupuncture

BY: JANET THOMSON, Inspire Family Acupuncture

As a parent, you know how difficult it is to have a child who’s not sleeping through the night. Children often do not sleep through the night until 4-6 months, and sometimes as late as 9-12 months. However, if your child is older than a year and is not sleeping through the night, he or she may benefit from acupressure treatments — helping you to sleep through the night too!

Chinese medicine understands that there are several reasons a child may not be sleeping through the night, including digestive concerns, stress and anxiety, and other constitutional imbalances.

Digestive Concerns

Nighttime digestive upset in children can have a number of causes. For some children, eating too much before bedtime (whether breast milk, formula, or food) can result in tossing and turning through the night. You may want to try feeding a little bit less in the evenings if you’re not sure whether this is the problem.

Other children may have more sensitive digestive systems and are either struggling with food sensitivities/allergies or slow digestion. You may want to do an elimination diet to test whether your child is struggling with some common allergens such as gluten, dairy, corn, soy, nuts, shellfish, or egg, or you can have your child tested for sensitivities for these foods. Whether or not your child has food sensitivities or slow digestive function, acupressure can help. Specific acupuncture points strengthen the digestive system, help to relieve any blockages, and promote peristalsis (the movement of food through the digestive tract).

Stress and Anxiety

For some children, disturbances in their life (at home, at school, within the family, or within the neighborhood or community) can result in accumulated stress and anxiety. Some children show anxious and stressed behavior quite obviously, while for others it can be somewhat hidden but manifests as poor sleep. Acupressure overall has a calming effect on the nervous system, and specific acupressure points are used for relieving accumulated stress, worry, anxiety, and fears.

Constitutional Imbalances

There are other imbalances that can accumulate in your child’s body over time, either from eating foods that are not appropriate for their body or from lifestyle patterns that do not fit what their body needs. Some of these children may have a weakened constitution, in which they might tire easily (but don’t necessarily sleep well), have trouble putting on weight, and are generally pale and have low energy. Other children with constitutional sleeping problems may run warm, be very easily excited, and have more energy than they can manage. In either case, acupressure can help to reset the constitutional imbalances so that your child can sleep through the night.

For all of these conditions, acupressure is an effective, non-invasive way to address childhood insomnia.
