How to Select an Acupuncturist or an Acupuncture Clinic in Oakland

BY: JANET THOMSON, Inspire Family Acupuncture

Are you interested in getting acupuncture but don’t know how to get started? Perhaps you’re worried that not every acupuncturist will have treated your particular condition. Or you find that there are 16 acupuncturists near you and you’re not sure who will be the best fit.

Here are some tips to guide you in the process of finding the right acupuncturist.

The relationship you’ll have with your acupuncturist may last a series of months, or even on and off over years. You’ll want to make sure that the person you’re working with feels comfortable, safe, and helpful for you. Start by thinking back on the best encounters you’ve had with doctors or other healing professionals. What made the most difference to you? Was their communication skill and style most important? Did you receive comfort knowing that they had degrees from the most prestigious institutions? Was it their long resume of treating your condition that made you feel comfortable? Was age or gender a factor?

Once you know what characteristics you’re looking for, look at the reviews for acupuncturists in your area. Many acupuncturists have reviews written for them on Google, Yelp, NextDoor, or other online or local networks. Do the reviews say that the acupuncturist communicates well, or has amazing credentials, or has treated your specific condition? Use your intuition in selecting a few acupuncturists in your area who feel like they might be a good fit.

Next, visit their web pages to get a sense for their practice style. Do they provide services other than acupuncture, such as providing Chinese herbs, or cupping, or moxibustion, or massage? Do they treat patients during a time of day that is convenient for you? Do they have the type of accessibility you need in terms of phone, email, or online booking or coordination?

Once you pick your top few acupuncturists, give them a call. Many acupuncturists will do a complementary phone call to determine whether you are a good fit for each other.
