Early in her pregnancy, Joanne was struggling with nausea and heartburn, along with anxiety about carrying the baby all the way to term while maintaining her other commitments. After her first acupuncture treatment she felt profoundly calm, and she committed to regular acupuncture appointments throughout her pregnancy. At that time, I used specific acupuncture points that address nausea and heartburn during pregnancy; she found these symptoms were much improved in the weeks after treatment.
As we continued to work together as her baby grew, Joanne experienced other common pregnancy related symptoms. Around week 20 she began suffering from constipation and hemorrhoids. Joanne found the acupuncture treatment reduced the constipation, and therefore her hemorrhoids were able to begin healing.
Further in the pregnancy, around week 30 and beyond, the baby went through large growth spurts that strained her pelvis, lower back, and hips. She found that the acupuncture reduced the pain so that she was better able to move around and more able to sleep through the night. When she slept more heavily, she found that her anxiety and stress were much lower.
Throughout her pregnancy, we discussed Joanne’s workload, family life, and ability to create the time for her to eat properly, sleep well, and reduce her stress. She is now at week 36 of her pregnancy and feels confident that she’ll carry the baby safely to term.
