Interior and Exterior Signs Help to Make Today’s Libraries More User-Friendly
Libraries are places where people of all ages usually come to for a specific purpose. In order for them to accomplish what they came to the library for, these people often rely on various signs there to guide them through the process.

Upon entering most libraries, visitors encounter signs that list the facility’s hours of operation, as well as other signs that promote special programs and events. Libraries frequently have certain themes or images that are associated with local histories, and the various signs there often reference those themes.

It’s very common for today’s libraries to contain lots of different sections or departments, such as video and DVD rental, computer centers, and reference and study rooms. By following way-finding signs that are normally in place, visitors can successfully make their way to their desired location. Way-finding signs can be affixed to walls or doors, hung from ceilings, or be portable, stand-up signs.

Different types of identification signs can be found throughout today’s libraries. There are signs that identify the locations of entrances and exits, restrooms, stairways, elevators, coffee/refreshment centers and other sections of the facility.

There are also electronic signs, three-dimensional, channel letter signs and graphics that can be displayed on ceilings, floors, walls or windows.

Because libraries are upbeat, learning-oriented environments, it’s only fitting that large, acrylic, dimensional letters with inspirational messages be mounted on many of their walls. It’s also not unusual to have positive and/or motivational quotes printed on signs, then mounted on library walls.

When visitors to libraries are interested in particular types of books, they can view wall and hanging signs that identify books by genre, and by fiction and non-fiction status. There are alphabetical book divider signs, signs that explain rules and pricing for computer and copier services, reception signs, and more.

The use of signage at libraries is not limited to their interiors. At some libraries, there are enclosed bulletin boards, or menu cases, where printed library and community-related information is displayed. Libraries everywhere are choosing to use electronic exterior signs. These digital signs are used for relating all sorts of information that is of interest to local residents.

Librarians and other staff members at most libraries are generally quite busy, and it can sometimes be difficult to obtain answers to questions regarding the facilities. By reading and following various types of signs, visitors to these facilities can quickly and easily reach their destinations, and find answers to their questions.
