What Are Floating Slab Foundations & Why Better?

Let’s jump right in! Floating slabs are used as foundations for many structures, including sheds, detached garages, additions, cottages, and many others. These slabs are reinforced around their perimeter but do  not have frost footings. They are called "floating" because they can move above the frost line as a single unit. Depending on the project requirements, an expert can also add enough insulation to minimize frost movement. This foundation type is designed to address some of the most common foundation problem concerns that residential homes face, that are brought on by natural causes of course. The most primary of which is foundation settlement, as is detailed below:

Foundation Settlement

The underlying part of the structure is one of the most important parts because it carries the entire load and transmits it to the strata below. The geotechnical engineer must thoroughly study numerous parameters prior to foundation construction; otherwise, major settlement issues may arise. The overall displacement that occurs on the foundation level is called foundation settlement. Although foundation settlement is typically measured in millimeters (being that the movement accumulates over time), it can cause significant structural damage. What Exactly Is A Floating Foundation?

The floating foundation is among the best construction foundation techniques. The floating foundation creates a stable framework for the building's superstructure and results in zero foundation settlement. A floating slab type of foundation is built by excavating the soil so that the weight of the building constructed on that soil equals the total weight of the excavated soil (such as the weight of the water in the soil.)  

Why Use A Floating Slab?

 Constructing a floating slab is among the most cost-effective foundation construction methods. A more traditional footing construction includes a strip footing with a frost wall above it. The strip footing is typically installed 4'-0" below grade and below the frost line. The strip footing and frost wall construction cost more because it requires more excavation, concrete, and labor. The term "floating" refers to when the soil beneath the footing or foundation does not undergo any additional load because the load of the building is equal to the soil that is displaced or unearthed. The foremost goal of building a floating foundation is to stabilize the weight of excavated soil by building a component of the same weight.
