Tips-For-Helping-With-Basement-Moisture-Intrusion-PreventionTo a person who has not gone through the process before, finishing a basement might sound like a matter of moderate work. However, those that have taken the project on can attest to a much more difficult project. It takes a series of logistical solutions and long-term planning to finish a basement that will both function well for your family and withstand adverse basement conditions. We at BARRIER Waterproofing Systems can help by offering some tips about how to finish a basement while addressing high moisture and hydrostatic factors.   One very important thing to keep in mind while finishing or remodeling your basement is the basic fact that, the more interior materials and design are used, the harder it is to identify and fix intruding moisture issues! Drywall, paint, pictures, carpets, etc., cover up the structure of the basement as they are intended to do (and may look amazing when completed), yet they also hide potential sources of moisture.   When moisture accumulates in your basement, it will lead to mold growth. Mold growth will then lead to a whole host of negative health and structural effects. If you are in the middle of planning or beginning a basement remodel or finishing, feel free to use the tips below to increase your odds of remaining mold free once everything is said and done.

The Right Drywall Can Make A Difference

Regular drywall has a paper surface on it that creates a smoother texture and enhances the board’s capacity to hold primer and paint. That same paper surface can hold any moisture it is exposed to, like a leak, for example.   Using drywall that has been rated for moisture protection, like drywall designed for bathrooms, can help prevent this from happening. This type of drywall is made with a fiberglass mat surface to achieve the same functionality while retaining some moisture-resistant properties.

Metal Framing Makes For A More Dry Structure

Just like with the paper-covered drywall, a lumber frame structure system will retain water if exposed to moisture. Homes that sit on top of a galvanized steel frame can effectively prevent mold infestation in the structure. Remember, however, it can still be affected by rust if it becomes wet for a long period of time. Best practice: Use a self-adhering flashing to separate the studs from the foundation concrete to prevent contact with any potential moisture.

Change Up Your Usual Trim Materials

It is essential to prevent or protect your home from standing water to avoid mold growth. One creative way to help block out potential standing water is to use trim made of PVC material in your basement. It can be laid to outline cabinets and walls as a waterproof material for reducing moisture exposure. They can even be painted in such a way to look just like a regular painted wood trim!

Keep Your Carpets Collectively Synthetic

If you are leaning towards including carpeting in your basement remodel or finishing, choosing a synthetic material will result in even more mold resistance. Carpets made of natural fiber materials and rubber can promote mold growth, feeding them with what they like best! There are many synthetic carpets available that are made of plastic recycled materials and still offer a plush flooring option.   We hope these tips have given you some ideas for getting a leg up on moisture intrusion prevention in your basement. The bottom line solution for preventing moisture intrusion is implementing waterproofing systems that will stop intruding moisture in its tracks. With the right materials and professional installation experience, any basement can stay dry and comfortable for many years into the future.   Our water remediation experts here at BARRIER Waterproofing Systems can evaluate your property for moisture intrusion and design a waterproofing system that addresses the problem at the source to block, drain, and redirect it away safely.
