How to Manage Annoying Fall Pests
Pests seek warm areas during the fall season. That makes your home susceptible to infestations. Before major problems occur, learn how to manage the most annoying fall pests with this helpful guide.
Asian Lady Beetles
Asian Lady Beetles are slightly bigger than North American Lady Beetles. Beetles become problematic during cooler months of the season when they rally around the exterior of homes, preying on other more beneficial insects. Whole cloves wonderfully keep Asian Lady Beetles away because they hate the smell.
Stink Bugs
The brown stink bug is the most common stink bug in the U.S. The stink measures about ¾ inch long and some adults can fly. While harmless, stink bugs can leave a nasty odor inside the home if they’re squished. They also stain fabrics if they are squished on them. Avoid squashing the stink bug to prevent it from releasing the odor. You should instead vacuum the stink bug and empty the bag inside the trash. Seal entry points as well, which typically include window frames and door areas.
Ants
Ants invade the home in troves and can be hard to manage once they’ve come inside. There are several different types of ants, including house ants and fire ants. A couple of ant species even bite! The best defense against ants is a clean home. If ants don’t have access to food, they’ll find other places to visit. Vinegar water sprayed near pet bowls can work wonders to keep ants away.
Rodents
Squirrels, skunks, raccoons, and mice are the most common pests that come inside our homes when inclement weather hits. They come inside for warmth and food. Mice carry diseases that can be transmitted through feces while other rodents usually don’t mean any harm. Seal up cracks around the home to keep them out.
Spiders
The scariest pest of the season is the spider. It’s one of the most common pests that come inside of homes during the winter months. They often come inside seeking shelter and food. Act quickly before spiders can lay their eggs -you’ll have a big problem on your hands if this happens.
Kill spiders if you see them in the home. Or, if you prefer more humane elimination strategies, remove non-venomous spiders by hand and place them outside in a grassy, wooded area. Keep in mind that spiders may return when using the second option. Larger infestations, such as when eggs hatch, may require professional help from Southern Pride Pest Control.
