Business Coaching: Core Leadership Principles

BY: Kerrie Hoffman, FocalPoint Business Coaching

In leadership, coaching and guiding others is critical to cultivating a successful company or department and developing your team to achieve goals and fulfill their highest potential. There are coaching principles that leaders should follow for success in their environments and professions.

As business, executive, and leadership coaches, we guide our clients according to professionally-developed and proven leadership values and principles. If you’re a business leader, executive, manager, or director, learning about core leadership principles is an opportunity to use these principles to enhance your leadership.

Lead With Values

Your values determine your priorities: I use an assessment with my clients to identify their values because they motivate them and their team in the workplace. We create a values action plan as a team-building activity as a workplace motivator.

Your values may be to provide excellent customer service or high-quality products or maintain high ethical production standards. Whatever your values, their effectiveness in guiding and motivating your and your team’s performance hinges on how well you communicate and follow those values daily.

Maintain Productive Interpersonal Communication

Well-developed interpersonal communication skills are essential to maintaining positive and harmonious relationships with your clients and peers and as a mentor, coach, or confidant for your team. Productive interpersonal communication involves conscientious listening, conflict resolution skills, and knowing how to interact with others based on the situation or challenge. Using more productive communication allows leaders to:

  • Offer positive, corrective, and developmental feedback more efficiently.
  • Learn the difference between coaching and problem-solving.
  • Know when and where to use coaching as the best approach.
  • Use positive reinforcement to encourage development.
  • Use empathy and active listening to relate to your peers and team.

Navigate Others

We often explain to our clients that – as business coaches – we are here to help them navigate their current environments and challenges to explore solutions and opportunities with them. We do not give them resolute orders on what to do when confronted with a specific issue: this involves balancing your leadership role as a mentor, confidant, and coach.

Anyone in a leadership position supports their team in whichever necessary way. Whether that means providing course correction to overcome an individual’s specific challenges, listening to their concerns, or walking with them to explore their options for achieving success, your presence and support are about navigating them in their personal and professional paths.

Be Goal-Oriented

As a business coach, I regularly emphasize the importance of creating and achieving goals for long-term success. To empower our clients to take leadership over their personal and professional success, they identify what changes they want to make in their lives and clarify where they want to go. Individuals then create and achieve purposeful goals to make the changes they want and need.

For comprehensive leadership development, you can book a consultation with me today.
