Channel letter signs are one of the most popular signs for storefronts. There are several reasons for this. What are the Different Types of Channel letters?
Front Lit Channel Letters are the most popular and common type of channel letter. As the name indicates, the letters or numbers of a front lit channel letter sign are lit and the LED (Light Emitting Diode) light shines through the acrylic face of the sign.
Back Lit channel letters are mounted with stand offs and the light shines from behind the letter creating a unique look. This is also called a ‘halo effect’.
How are Channel Letters Mounted to the Wall?
Channel letters can be mounted directly to the wall, or they can be mounted to a backer panel that is then mounted on the wall. Another popular option is the use of a raceway to mount the channel letter sign. Often property management companies may require businesses to use a raceway to mount their Channel letter sign as you won’t have to drill as many holes in the wall compared with a direct mount.
In our recent project for a law firm, we started with a site survey and discussed the sign project with the client. They wanted different signs on the different sides of the building, and they wanted it to be large and eye catching. After discussing all the available options our client wanted both front and back lit channel letters for their outdoor signs. The letters were mounted on to a backer panel which was then mounted on the wall. We created a mockup and once approved we worked on getting the appropriate engineering drawings and the sign permit to ensure we abide by the Sign by-laws. You should always obtain your sign permit for new signs prior to installation. Once the we received the sign permit, we went into production and had the new signs installed within a couple of weeks.
While channel letters will cost more than a light box sign, you should consider the advantages of having a sign that stands out, symbolizes your brand and lasts a long time. Because there are many options when it comes to channel letter signs in Toronto, make sure you understand the quality of the LED lights, the thickness of the acrylic and metal used. A cheap LED may have a cheaper cost, but it won’t shine as brightly and will dim over time. Low quality acrylic will also not hold its colour in the long term.
