What material makes the best signs?  Obviously, this depends on the type of sign and application.  For a relatively inexpensive but long lasting routed sign, HDU is a top candidate.  HDU stands for High Density Urethane.  It is made by mixing liquid chemicals to create a foam product.  Unlike other foam products, such as Styrofoam, HDU is more solid with less air bubbles (porosity), making it more rigid and impervious to all petroleum based products.  It is waterproof and unaffected by climatic changes. So when creating a sign, what application does HDU play?  Due to the high density and rigidity of HDU, this product is great for routing and allows the sign maker to create a routed sign that appears to be wood.  The designer is also able to be more creative knowing the HDU is durable enough to handle intricate cuts and will not splinter or split.  Also it will not rot or be eaten by termites.

When compared to wood, HDU has the advantage.  HDU will not warp, crack or bow like solid wood when exposed to the elements.  It is a little lighter than wood, making it easier to handle, which also cuts shipping costs.  HDU can be laminated together to create any size, shape or form.  Many manufacturers warrant the HDU for 10 years. The down side to HDU is that it can have a slight flex when used in a long narrow sign.  When using between posts or bridging it between supports, it is best to reinforce it with a backing board or put a frame around it.

Wood cracks or warps and goes through stress with climate changes.  There is no warranty for wood and it can be quite heavy.  Joining wood pieces together is more labor intensive than HDU.  However, when properly treated or painted, wood can offer a very long lasting exterior sign.
