When students enter Gwinnett County’s newest high school for the first day of class, they will be greeted by a striking, custom-manufactured 3D lobby sign – – strategically placed to serve prominently as a focal point for students, staff and visitors.
Discovery High School, located on Old Norcross Road in Lawrenceville, GA, provides relief for the Berkmar High School and Central Gwinnett High School clusters, and will be known as the Discovery High School Titans. Discovery will feature project-based learning, with a goal of taking real world needs and combining those needs with the real world talents of the Discovery High School student body. Discovery High School will feature an Academy School concept that will include the Business and Entrepreneurship Academy, the Fine Arts and Communication Academy, the Health and Human Services Academy, and the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Academy.
Big Mouth Signs is proud to have been selected by Principal John Campbell and his staff to provide the interior signage for Discovery High School. Our part of the amazing end result included classroom markers, room locator signs, and hallway markers. In addition, we were honored to have the opportunity to design, build, and install the focal point sign – – a 10’ tall by 13’ wide configuration that sits at the entrance to the Discovery High School Theater, adjacent to the cafeteria area and visible from the building entrance.
The goal of the focal point sign was to create a sense of pride in a school that represents an innovative new approach toward education in Georgia’s largest school system. Everything about Discovery High School is new and different – – from their approach to education to the architecture of the building. Even the school colors (think Seattle Seahawks) are different. The challenge for Big Mouth Signs was to approach the project with the understanding that the end product had to appeal to the uniqueness of the institution – – typical just wouldn’t get the job done. Fortunately, we had a big wall to work with.
The final outcome is big… spanning 130 square feet of concrete block wall. The lettering was cut from .25” thick acrylic, using a CNC router, then painted using logo color automotive-grade paint. The lime green portion of the eight-point star logo was also constructed using custom-painted acrylic, as was the two elements of the “D” portion of the logo. The highlight of the logo element is a 5’ tall prismatic two-color star, custom formed to a tight crease on both the vertical and horizontal seams.
