Muscle tension is one of those things you just learn to live with. Shoulders creeping up toward your ears by mid-afternoon. That knot between your shoulder blades that’s been there so long it feels like part of you now. The tight band down the side of your neck that stretching never quite touches. You roll your shoulders. Crack your neck. Grab a massage now and then. Helps for a bit. Then it all creeps right back. Some tension digs in deeper than the usual stuff can reach. That’s where dry needling comes in.

Why Muscle Tension Builds

Tension doesn’t just appear. Muscles tighten up and hold when they’re overworked, stressed, or stuck in one spot too long. Sit hunched at a desk for years, and the muscles across your upper back and neck stay switched on all day, bracing. Carry your stress in your shoulders, and they never really let go. Do the same motion over and over at work and certain muscles clamp down and stay that way.

Give it enough time and some of that tightness stops being general. It turns into specific knots. Trigger points. A patch of muscle fiber gets stuck clenched and won’t release, choking off its own blood supply, going tender.

What Makes Trigger Points So Stubborn

Here’s why the usual fixes come up short. These knots sit deep in the muscle. Stretching tugs at the muscle broadly and usually can’t reach a specific knot buried in there. Massage works the surface, the outer layers. So you get relief for an hour or two, the area loosens, and then the knot, which never actually let go, pulls everything tight all over again.

They’re sneaky another way too. They refer pain. A knot in your shoulder can throw an ache up into your head or down your arm, so the tension you feel in one spot might be coming from a knot somewhere else entirely.

How the Needle Releases It

Dry needling puts a thin needle straight into the trigger point, right down to where it actually sits. Nothing’s injected, which is where the dry part comes from. It gets to the knot instead of working around it from outside.

When the needle finds the spot, the muscle gives a quick twitch. That twitch is the knot letting go, those stuck fibers finally releasing. Blood rushes back in, the tightness drops, and the tension it was holding, plus any pain it was referring, tends to ease off.

Worth Looking Into?

Worth asking about when tension’s been parked in the same spot for weeks, when stretching and massage only help for a little while, or when a knot’s throwing pain somewhere else.

If muscle tension has dug in and won’t quit, Modern Medicine of Gilbert, AZ can check whether trigger points are behind it and whether dry needling would help. Give us a call to get started.
