Boston, MA – Tips to Detect Plumbing Leakage in Your Home | Plumbing News

SYNOPSIS:

BY: Teresa Royer, STOP Metrowest

Do you want to detect plumbing leakage before it causes water damage?

It is tricky to trace plumbing leakage in your home, but it is necessary. If plumbing leakage is left untreated, it can result in water damage, which leads to mold growth. To eliminate a leakage, you must be able to identify the source. Finding the source of leakage depends heavily upon the nature of leakage. For example, a leaky pipe under the sink is easy to detect than the ones underneath the walls.

To detect plumbing leakage, you may need to contact a plumber. Often times, a water damage restoration company like Service Team of Professionals (STOP) can help identify moisture patterns and other signs of plumbing leaks.

Leak Confirmation

To look for the moisture source, it is better to remove and look under or behind appliances that use water. For example, a leaky dishwasher supply line will leak water all around the appliance.  You may see mold growth, water marks and buckling of a floor or cabinet wall. Service teams like STOP are able to help detect moisture with a meter that measures moisture content in drywall, wood, and other materials. Sometimes, there may need to be a small opening made to see behind the wall or ceiling.

Bathroom and Kitchen

To detect plumbing leaks in bathrooms and kitchens, open up the cabinets under the sink and inspect for corrosion on pipes. The other things that you need to look out for are dampness and bubbling or peeling paint. If you notice any of these signs, turn the water faucets off, clean the area with a dry cloth, and turn the water back on. The leakage will appear when the water is turned on again. If such is the case, make sure to replace the leaky supply line right away.

Walls, Floors, and Ceilings

Monitor the areas around the appliances and fixtures that use water. This includes, in particular, the refrigerators, toilets, dishwashers, and bathtubs. If certain spots on the floor and the ceilings are cracked and spongy, chances are that there is a plumbing leak. Also, make sure to examine the rooms that are located right beneath a kitchen or a bathroom. Bubbling paint and damaged wallpapers are signs of leakage, simmering under the surface. For plumbing inspection and repair, contact a professional plumber. Service Team of Professionals may also be able to help determine the source of the water intrusion.

 Crawlspaces and Basements

The exposed pipes in the basement and crawlspaces should be inspected. If there is moisture or corrosion around the pipes, there is likely a leak. The areas containing mold and mildew should be the first ones to get checked. Remember that water tends to travel in a downward motion. Therefore, it is is not necessary for the leakage to be where the moisture is.

All in all, water damage restoration can cost you differently depending on a number of factors involved. For personal safety and building safety, water damage restoration is best left to professionals like Service Team of Professionals (STOP).
