Use & Care of Your Car Magnet Sign
Extend the life of your magnetic sign with a little TLC! Car magnets are the most common use of magnetic signs but not the only one. Regardless of how you’re using your magnetic sign, it will last longer if you take a few minutes on a regular basis to care for it properly. The following tips apply to any magnetic sign.
Before Applying Car Magnets
A clean surface is a must. The magnet can slip or even fly off your vehicle when driving if it’s not mounted to a clean surface. Grit that accumulates between the magnet and the vehicle can damage the paint.
Carefully clean and dry both the surface you’re placing the magnet on and the magnetic side of your sign. Remove all grit, grime, and grease. A final swipe with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol is a good idea. Do this every couple of weeks to keep your magnet in top shape and to protect the paint on your car.
Applying Car Magnets
Magnets need a smooth and flat surface to adhere to. Avoid ridges, deep curves, rust spots, and dents so the magnetic sign lays flat. Signs mounted on horizontal surfaces like hoods and roofs are far more susceptable to fading from the increased direct sunlight.
Without touching the magnet to the vehicle, center it horizontally on the panel. Carefully place one corner against the metal surface first and then allow the magnetic sign to pull itself toward the metal surface making sure there are no air-pockets.
Do not drag the magnet across the metal surface to reposition it. This can stretch or damage the sign. Remove the sign by pulling up one corner and lifting the magnet off.
Removing Magnetic Signs for Cleaning
Regular cleaning will keep your magnetic sign looking as good as new. Every couple of weeks is a good rule of thumb but if you drive on dirt roads, in snow or mud, or in areas with heavy air-pollution, weekly cleanings is a good practice.
To remove your car magnet, lift up one corner and carefully pull it off the vehicle. Thoroughly clean the vehicle surface AND the magnet with a mild soapy solution. Rinse and allow to dry. Give a last wipe with a bit of rubbing alcohol. When dry, reapply the magnet.
Storing Magnetic Signs
Store magnetic signs flat in a cool, dry place. Do not stack with the magnetic sides touching each other. Lay them flat on a sturdy shelf and, to prevent creases or bending, do not place heavy objects on top of them.
