Magnetic signs are a poplular option for people who want to advertise while on the job but want the option to remove the sign during off-hours. However, a magnetic sign requires care and maintenance. Leaving it on indefinitely is not what it's designed for. A more permanent vehicle graphic does not require regular maintenance and would be a better choice. However, magnetic signs for vehicles have their place. Just be prepared to put some effort into taking care of the sign so you don't damage either the sign or your vehicle. Without regular maintenance your sign could fall off, damage the finish on your vehicle, or leave "ghost images" in the paint where the sign was placed. Here are some tips on caring for your vehicle magnetic sign: Location - choose a relatively flat surface where the magnet lays flat against the surface. Never install a magnet over a ridge, rust spot, or trim. Installation - The trick here is to ensure your magnetic sign adheres fully to the surface. Align the sign where you want it, let one end make contact and roll the magnet down over the surface. You should feel the magnet "pull" as it rolls. Never slide the magnet in place if you need to adjust the placement. Sliding the magnet will damage your vehicle's paint and can stretch or damage the magnet. Magnetic signs should be removed at least once a week. Clean the magnet and the vehicle's surface before reinstalling. Varying the placement of the sign on the vehicle every time will prevent leaving a "ghost image", a slight fading of the vehicle's paint where the sign was placed. Cleaning - Clean and dry both surfaces of your magnetic sign and the vehicle surface before installation. Follow cleaning recommendations of your vehicle manufacturer. Generally, both the sign and the vehicle can be cleaned with soapy water, rinsed, and dried with a soft cloth. Storing - When not in use, your magnetic sign should be stored flat in a clean, dry place. A metal door or filing cabinet make a good storage spot. Magnetic signs can be stacked but never with the magnetic surfaces facing each other. Placing heavy objects on top of your magnetic sign causes creases and dimples that will impede adhesion when you try to reinstall them.
