However, there are many ways to grow and scale a business. It is your job to determine which technique is best suited for your business and will help you achieve the goals you have set out.

To grow or scale a business are two different things. To scale a business is to increase revenue without significantly increasing costs. To grow a business is to increase revenue no matter what the cost. Both may seem straightforward, but there are ways to do both. Which you choose to do depends on your business, but the tips to either grow or scale your business include:

Growth

  • Develop a plan – The overall goal is to “Sale more,” but how will you go about this? Will you change the layout of your business to showcase the more expensive products? Are you going to open a website, sell things on amazon, or hire more employees? There needs to be an understanding of how you will grow a business because it’s more complex than 1,2,3.
  • Find the money – The old saying is, “To make money, you have to spend money.” Growing a business means going above the current level your business is at, which means more money is required than at the beginning. The money may be found within the profits, or it may be necessary to file for a loan if you believe your ideas on growing your business will be worth it.

Scaling

  • Use technology to your advantage – Using technology is relatively cheap. In today’s society, you have the option to use your phone to market your business and attract new customers. Opposite to traditional ways, which could cost thousands or millions of dollars, using Instagram for ads is significantly cheaper. It also allows you to pay attention to the customer environment instead of going about the tedious, expensive task of conducting surveys. Technology provides a new cheaper dimension to a business.
  • Reduce the cost of products and services – you should be looking at ways to lower the amount of money you spend on vendors. Attempt to look for different companies capable of supplying the same resources but at a reduced price.

When should a business grow or scale?

Ultimately you scale a business whenever you feel there is room to make extra revenue by reducing your cost. If you believe you have too much overhead and see a way to reduce it, you should take advantage of it. Or if you think there are cheaper vendors out there or a more accessible, less expensive way to market your business, you should immediately look into it.

However, growth depends on several factors; if you see the potential and have the money to do so. If you want to increase revenue; you need more customers; but if your area is already saturated and there are no more customers to attract, it will be hard to grow. Conversely, if you have the customers to draw but no money to curate events to attract them, then it’s a lost cause. Only when you see a new customer base and have the necessary finances should you embark on growing your business.
