Rick Cittar’s Approach
My solution for helping the adult student is two-fold.
- First, I prescribe a series of drills and technical work to improve their basic physical skills, because in most cases the inability to make progress is directly related to improper technique.
- Second, I draw upon the knowledge and experience the student has and help properly label and categorize what they already know. This helps the adult student develop a better, clearer, and more accurate overview of what they play on the instrument.
Adult students are generally very committed to the discipline of proper practice because they truly want to learn more and improve their playing skills. For those who have been playing for a while, the motivation is to get out of a rut where they are “spinning their wheels”, and help the student make progress and become a better player faster.
