Do you want your employees to be independent?

A good business leader does not block his employees from becoming leaders of their own. A good business leader nurtures and develops such leaders within his workforce.

Are you that good business leader? Developing leadership in your employees can pay off in many ways. It will benefit your role and the business itself in tremendous aspects. You must be thinking, how do you develop leaders?

The answer lies below.

Encourage Networking

Socialization is the process through which we learn how to become human and act in a society. Socialization takes place at every level of your life. At work, this could mean networking. As a leader, you should encourage your employees to network with each other.

Networking will allow employees to come out of their shells and talk with each other. This leads to the flow of information which can help develop skills and polish one’s abilities. The relationships formed in doing so lead to making contacts. These aspects are crucial for leadership development.

Mentorship

Rare are the leaders who became so of their own doing. One of the best ways to make leaders is training and grooming people in your office. You should initiate and encourage mentorship at your workplace. Take an individual or group of individuals with potential under your wing and start training them to so that they can take charge when the need arises.

As a leader, it is your responsibility to show them the ropes and allow them to learn from your experience and methods. Remember though, you don’t necessarily have to do this yourself. You can initiate mentorship programs with senior employees acting as mentors to individuals.

Opportunities for Growth

Learning is best done with hands on experience. The aforementioned tips will be of no use unless you allow employees to try them out. Do not block additional work or responsibilities from your employees. Give them challenging projects to try their hand at and see how they cope. Delegate tasks to see which employees can rise up to the challenge. The work your employees do should not be stagnant and they should not have the same routine every day.

This also extends to non-work related opportunities as well. Encourage your employees to attend trainings, industry events, and professional development courses. All of these are various ways to groom your employees for leadership by adding to their skills.

Feedback and Evaluation

Stumbling in the dark is of no help in growing and improving oneself. It is necessary that you take time out to give constructive feedback. Without consistent feedback which is fair and objective, your employees will not grow.

Feedback acts as a review mechanism through which employees can evaluate themselves. It shows them avenues to improve further and leads to better time allocation.

Lead by Example

Leading by example is the final capstone to inculcating employee leadership. By showing them what an ideal leader should do, you will be the beacon which lights the path for others.

What’s more, this provides motivation to the employees and engenders loyalty and respect.

But what if you don’t have those leadership skills, you ask? What if you are not cut out to be a leader?
