Hybrid vs. Traditional: What’s Right for Your Law

BY: Your Name, Your Business

Hybrid models are becoming increasingly popular in today’s society. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses, including law firms, were forced to adopt a remote work model in order to keep the workers safe without suspending operations indefinitely.

As a silver lining, this proved that a remote model could not only keep revenue and production competitive with traditional work structures; in some cases the remote model was more profitable and improved productivity. The added flexibility and freedom helped motivate workers in many industries to produce even more, leaving business owners to question if returning to the office was a good idea anyway.

Thus, the hybrid model started coming into fashion. Businesses continued to allow a predominantly remote structure of working with occasional in-person meetings. This saved them money, as the occasional visit to a conference room cost a paltry rental fee compared with monthly rent expenses.

If you’re running a law firm, is a traditional model or hybrid model best for you?

Pros and Cons of the Traditional Model

The tried-and-true traditional model of running a law firm involves renting a space, or purchasing one if you have that kind of capital available to dedicate, and requiring workers, including your attorneys and their support staff, to commute daily and work in the office.

The benefits of this model mostly involve your ability to provide oversight and support to your staff. When they’re working essentially under your nose, you are able to see personally who is having success and who is falling behind. This helps you make informed decisions regarding who will run point on high profile cases and who must prove themselves yet if they are to be worthy of working with your high caliber firm.

Support is much easier to provide when you are immediately available on-site as well. A simple visit to an employee’s office and they will tell you or show you firsthand the issues they are encountering so you, as a supervisor and a mentor, can assist in solving the problem.

The big downside associated with traditional formats is the cost of running business and the footprint as well. It is costly to rent space in a high-quality commercial building. In addition, having a reception area, conference room, enough offices for all the attorneys, and space for storage and files as well adds to the required square footage, hiking up the price even more.

A traditional work format can be effective, but it is costly.

Pros and Cons of Hybrid Models

On the other hand, hybrid models allow the workers to mostly operate remotely with minimal oversight and increased freedom and flexibility. This helps with employee morale, as they are empowered to work through their duties without feeling watched, but hinders your ability to make meaningful observations and mentor.

The biggest advantage of a hybrid model, other than increased flexibility for your workers, is the cost savings. Dispensing with the need for physical space every day saves you loads in expenses, funneling that revenue back into your operating account for other purposes.
