A dimensional letter sign is great for interior office signs. Using different sheet material and our CNC router, we can create a custom sign of your logo or any other information that you want to display on the walls. The two main materials that we use are acrylic and aluminum. Aluminum comes in different finishes and can be painted, powder-coated, or anodized, among other things so we use it when the client wants solid metal letters. For everything else, we typically use acrylic because it is very versatile and comes in many different colors. Some people call us asking about foam dimensional letters. Foam is another option for dimensional letters, but we do not like to use it as it looks cheap, and if you use adhesive for installation, they are much harder to remove.
For Rosenthal Dental, we used 3/8″ black acrylic and 3/8″ black acrylic with brushed aluminum laminate. Acrylic comes in many different colors and can be painted, but if you want a metal look without using solid metal letters, we can laminate the acrylic with a thin metal laminate so the faces are metal. One thing to keep in mind is that with metal laminate acrylic letters, you will still be able to see the acrylic color from the sides. We typically use black acrylic as a base for this reason, but we have painted the sides for some clients who wanted the entire thing to be silver. We simply used brushed aluminum for the faces and brushed aluminum-colored paint for the sides.
We used 3/8″ thick acrylic because the sign was to be mounted to the wall with studs, and acrylic needs to be a minimum of 3/8″ thick in order to hold the studs. If the material is any thinner, the acrylic can snap while we are attaching the studs to the letters.
