There are many different ways to make a lobby sign depending on your logo. Many logos look great as a dimensional letter sign which are 3-dimensional letters and logos that are routed from a material. We typically use acrylic, or aluminum if the client wants to use metal. For Post Alarm’s sign, we decided to go with acrylic because their logo was black, blue, and orange. Acrylic already comes in black, and we are able to custom paint the acrylic to any color.
First, we started with a sheet of 1/4″ thick black acrylic. The letters and logo are routed, and then the different pieces of the logo are painted accordingly. Post Alarm had a brand guide that we could follow so the necessary Pantone colors were already called out. We create a paper template so the installers are able to place each piece exactly where it needs to be, and the sign was installed onto the wall using VHB (very high bonding) tape and silicone.
They needed to include their UL-approved symbol so we made that from black acrylic too. The registered trademark symbol was very small, around 0.5″ in diameter, so we made that part from 1/4″ white acrylic, and just added the “R” and the circle with black vinyl. If all or part of a letter or logo is too thin, we’re unable to route it from the acrylic sheet without the acrylic breaking. When this happens, we’ll use vinyl instead, or increase the size of the sign if it is important that the sign is 3-dimensional.
